Eating a well-balanced diet, according to Canada's Food Guide and taking a daily prenatal multivitamin containing folic acid helps ensure the health of mother and baby.
Studies have shown that folic acid helps prevent serious birth defects called neural tube defects (NTDs) when taken daily before conception and during pregnancy. NTDs occur very early on in pregnancy and can lead to abnormalities of the skull, brain and spinal cord. In Canada, the most common of these abnormalities is spina bifida. One way to help prevent NTDs is to make sure you get enough folic acid. While folic acid can be found in some of the foods you eat, most Canadian women don't get their recommended daily allowance, much less the extra folic acid they need during pregnancy. That’s why Centrum® Materna® has 1 mg of folic acid to ensure you’re getting enough.
