First In-utero Surgery in Canada for the Treatment of Spina Bifida a Success

TORONTO – In a Canadian first, a team from Mount Sinai Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has repaired a form of spina bifida in a fetus at 25 weeks gestation.

The baby’s mother, Romeila Son, recovered very well from surgery, and a bouncing baby girl, Eiko, weighing 2.45 kg, was born on August 19 at 36 weeks gestation at Mount Sinai Hospital. Since her birth, Eiko has needed no further intervention for this usually debilitating condition. This is the first case in Canada where the mother has not had to travel to the United States for this specialized surgery.

SB&H Adult Hydrocephalus Support Group
is BACK!!

Are you an adult living with hydrocephalus? Would you like to talk to other people living with it too? 

Then join the Adult Hydrocephalus Support Group. We meet on the LAST WEDNESDAY of EACH MONTH at the SB&H offices. If you do not live in or near Toronto, YOU CAN STILL JOIN the meetings by conference call. 

Anyone interested in coming to a meeting or being connected via conference call, please contact Steve Kean at skean@sbhao.on.ca or by phone at 800-387-1575 or 416-214-1056 ext. 226. 

We Need A Group Facilitator

We are also looking for an adult with hydrocephalus who would be interested in facilitating the group meetings. If you are interested, please let Steve know as soon as possible.

The next meeting of the Adult Hydrocephalus Support Group is on Wednesday, November 29 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
