FEATURED ARTIST PROFILE

Learn about our June artist, Lorna Wreford (1938-2014) from Toronto:

1. How did you come up with the idea for this drawing that is included inside the calendar.

Lorna’s paintings interpret Southern and Central Ontario’s farms, forests, lakes and streams. Her love of nature, preserving it and educating future generations as to its importance was preeminent in her process. Several scenes are intended to record features that are disappearing due to the effects of urban development.

2. Why do you like drawing/painting or taking pictures?

Lorna’s paintings represented a degree of freedom to her, in that there are no braces, crutches or wheelchairs to be seen. She was most comfortable learning about, and sharing her knowledge of the natural world.

3. How did you feel when you heard your artwork was selected for the TGIF Calendar?

Lorna was thrilled in 2000, 2002 and 2012 to be asked to provide artwork for the SB&H TGIF lottery calendars. She was extremely proud of her work, her accomplishments and the obstacles overcome to produce it, and the faith of SB&H to distribute it on a provincial level. She would undoubtedly be humbled by the request to be included in the 10-year retrospective and we, as her children, are honoured to have had her work chosen posthumously.

4. How has the Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario assisted you and/or your family?

Lorna appreciated the support of SB&H and its fundraising efforts. As it does not rely on any form of government funding, the success of the calendar program is vital to making a positive difference to so many who turn to them for support.
