Default traveling through the mountains with baby with a shunt?

My daughter 9 months has hydrocephlus and shunt due to aracnoid cyst.she had four surgerys at five months old due to complication after cyst was drained.we live in alberta.and our family is in B.C we like to see them on a regular basis.we have a large family and usually cannot afford to fly,and not sure about that either?but the flight is an hour and the drive is 13 hours but mostly through mountains.wonder if anyone has driven through mountains with shunt?

My 2 and a half year old son has had a shunt since he was 2 weeks old. He has flown often (mostly too and from BC Children's Hospital), and we've never had a problem. His neurosurgeon hasn't been concerned about it either.

I think that it depends on what your child's tolerances are and what the doctor thinks about the altitude changes. For the most part, I don't think that this is s a huge issue. I think that your child may experience some mild discomforts as he adjusts to the changes in altitude...maybe some headaches or other discomfort. I would find out how your child handles it by finding areas where you can test the waters so to speak. Find lower altitude changes and try it out.

Not so sure about the mountains, though I know that flying normaly affects patients with shunts, though not all patients, but it would be better if you consulted with the doctor just to be sure.

I am sorry about your daughter it is just rough having to go through that. Four surgeries at five months old is just excruciating pain even for me and I am just behind the computer screen reading your post. How is your daughter doing Was she okay when you took her to the mountains?
