2011 Spirit Wheel Walk Run Stories

On a Saturday evening this past June, some local members of the Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario held a fund-raising dance at the Lions Hall in Killaloe.

Well-known local band, Renegade, provided the music, with the gate being donated to help fund research and to promote awareness of the problems created by these medical conditions, which are caused in pregnancy during the formation of the tissues of the brain and spinal cord (nearly nine of 10 children born with Spina Bifida also develop hydrocephalus).

The walk will followed a route from Lakeshore Road at Navy Street and proceeded toward Lake Ontario.

Sabrina along with 16 friends and family came out and did a 30 minute walk around Sabrina's Grandmother's neighbourhood. Sabrina along with two of her friends carrier the banner the whole time and were quite proud to be doing so.

On June 10th my mother and I walked 8km on the Kate Pace Way.

The Kate Pace Way is a paved pathway that is named in honour of Olympic skier and native daughter Kate Pace. The pathway winds through residential areas, roadways and the waterfront and runs in a north-south direction through North Bay.

We had an enjoyable time, the weather was great. It took us an hour and a half to walk/wheel the 8km.

We raised $150.

Gabby's Gift was a hit!!! About 250-275 people came out to support us. The weather was perfect and the crowd was energetic.

The Walk this year was spectacular! We had quite a few people walk with us, and so far raised over $1500. We had people ask us along the way for pamphlets and for information and how they could join in next year.

Well, it ended up after a dismal sounding weather report that Mother Nature heard my plea and sent us a beautiful day for the walk. Here are some pics from the fourth annual Spirit Wheel Walk Run “Jake’s Journey” held May 29th, 2011.

The Cote family may soon have to think about moving to a bigger place. “I thought this would be a family thing,” Sonia Cote said after the second annual Saffi’s Walk: Spirit Wheel Walk and Run event

Our second annual SWWR “Nick’s Cheering Squad” went great! Nice weather, great crowd and we all had fun! We even had another mom with a child with SB come and walk as well with her family!

We had a lot of people say "your shirt says ask me - so I'm asking you"
The shirts were great! We got a donation at the walk as well because of them!

Can't wait for next year!”
