Dr. Sandrine de Ribaupierre - Transition of Care: Who is going to follow me as an adult? The transition of care between childhood and adulthood is not always easy in chronic conditions, since the medical team is usually not the same. Spina bifida and hydrocephalus are examples where the pediatric medical teams are more aware of the conditions, however, past a certain age they are not able to follow their patients anymore. What are the different models of care, and what would be the ideal situation?
Dr. Miles Johnston - Hydrocephalus research; old ideas and new perspectivesIt is increasingly evident that we lack a basic understanding of the mechanisms that contribute to ventricular expansion in hydrocephalus. For this reason, researchers have been looking at new ways to address the biomechanical causes of hydrocephalus. Several innovative developments in the experimental setting have suggested alternative approaches to this problem and offer hope that with time, new therapies can be developed to reduce the consequences of ventricular expansion.
Dr. Maureen Dennis - Living with spina bifida as an adult: skills and challengesLittle is known about individuals with spina bifida and hydrocephalus after the school years. This presentation reviews current research about the neurocognitive, academic, and behavioural skills and challenges of young and middle-aged adults with spina bifida.
